Wood Waste/Biomass

Greenwood Sales, located in Kings Lynn, opted for a Pearson Varistar 34M Mobile Adjustable Star Screen to boost their screening capacity in the processing of Wood Waste and Compost.

The Pearson Varistar was chosen due to its compact size, manoeuvrability and the adjustable Star Bed which gives Greenworld the option of screening between 10mm – 50mm. The machine is currently used for wood chip and can also be used for 10mm Compost Screening if it is too wet to use a Trommel.

The Varistar machine receives Wood Waste which has been shredded at the rate of 30 tons per hour, and which has then passed through a Trommel for a primary cut. The Varistar is used as a ‘refiner screen’ to further enhance the quality of the chip.

David Kilham, production manager at Greenworld, chose the machine as it was the only machine that offered the flexibility of instant push button adjustment  to optimise the sorting capability of the star screen, a compact size and a cost effective price. Continuous use producing a 50mm recycled woodchip has shown the machine to be both reliable while exhibiting very little wear on the stars themselves.

It is used at the end of production line to remove the oversize chips which result from “pencilling” in a rotary trommel that is the primary screen separator immediately after the shredder. This results in a much more consistent chip size, with a much lower percentage of oversize that meets the Greenworld clients specification.

Skip Waste & Trommel Fines

Lincoln’s Lindum Waste Recycling had been operating a Waste Transfer Station at their Saxilby site for a number of years when they approached Prostar with a view to replacing their ageing Trommel, and also to address the issue of Loss on Ignition (LOI) testing on their Trommel Fines which had become urgent due to the escalating cost of Landfill Tax charges.

The existing Trommel was replaced by a new Heavy Duty 6m x 2m diameter unit featuring 10mm thick 30mm screening panels, Quad Drive and an adjustable incline mechanism.

The problem fines were addressed by collecting the fines from the new Trommel by a Conveyor, which then carried the material through a 6mm Flip Flow Screen which separated out the soils which could then be disposed of through the Lindum Construction business.

David Sullivan from Lindum says:

“Prostar have been supplying us with recycling equipment for many years, we're extremely grateful for the hard work they have put in to help us resolve our trommel fines situation. From initial discussions through to commissioning and after sales they have worked closely with us to make sure everything went according to plan. We'd be happy to recommend them for any recycling needs.“

The Oversize +6mm to 30mm material was then passed through a Zig-Zag Air Classification which split the remaining material into three parts - dust, clean aggregates and finally the remaining lights fraction.

Gypsum and Plasterboard Recycling

Prostar are able to offer a range of Screens, Conveyors and Infeed Hoppers for the Gypsum and Plasterboard Recycling Industry.

Roy Hatfield Ltd of Rotherham needed to replace their ageing Hopper as it was prone to stalling under load which caused numerous stoppages to the line. As part of a large investment in upgrading their Plasterboard Recycling plant Roy Hatfield opted for a new purpose-built Hopper proposed by Prostar.

The new machine has a capacity of 25 tonnes and is 11.5m long with an inclined section to interface with the existing plant. An adjustable Teaser unit is fitted to ensure an even and level feed-off, and the machine features Dual Drive and a chain-driven heavy duty belt with double side seals which prevent the ingress of dust into the centre section.

Managing Director Mark Hatfield had this to add about his new Hopper:

“Initially we weren’t sure a hopper could be built to handle our plasterboard material. From experience we know many equipment manufacturers underestimate the challenges gypsum handling can bring. I am happy to report that, despite my concerns the hopper worked as intended even exceeding throughput expectations. It was delivered on time and the entire process from order, manufacture, delivery to after care has been first class. Many thanks”.
